FORMER JEFFERSON COUNTY GOP CHAIRMAN JERRY T. MILLER

Having fulfilled his four-month commitment as Jefferson County Republican Party Chairman, Jerry T. Miller has relinquished that post and filed to run for the 19th District Metro Council seat held by Hal Heiner.

Last September, Miller was asked by the Executive Committee of the Jefferson County Republican Party to become its Chairman following the unexpected resignation of Brad Cummings.  “When I learned last September that my Councilman, Hal Heiner, would be running for Mayor, it was my intention to immediately announce my candidacy for his 19th District Metro Council seat,”, Miller said.  “When asked to defer my personal plans until January, I was glad to do so, as it was clear that it was most important to get the Jefferson County Republican Party better positioned to win elections in 2010.”

During his tenure, Miller appointed a search committee chaired by Metro Councilman Ken Fleming to identify the best person to fill the remainder of the four-year term of JCRP Executive Committee Chair.  Following their recommendation, Shellie May was elected the new JCRP Chairman at Tuesday night’s meeting, the first woman to hold that post in 28 years. Miller focused on building party unity during his term and initiated a search for a new headquarters location for the JCRP. Under his leadership, JCRP held voter registration drives at area high schools and made 2,000 calls last December on behalf of Jimmy Higdon’s successful bid for State Senate.

Miller worked in the private sector for 31 years as a CPA and health care executive.  He was appointed Commissioner of Kentucky’s Department of Parks in spring of 2006 following two years as Executive Director of Finance and Administration for the Commerce Cabinet where he worked for Secretary Jim Host.  He worked closely with Host on the Louisville Arena Task Force from its inception until the enabling legislation was passed by the 2006 General Assembly. While Parks’ Commissioner, he founded the Kentucky State Parks Foundation, which has already made two grants to Louisville’s E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. He served on the Foundation board of directors until August 2009.

Miller stated, “I feel called to devote the rest of my working life to public service.  Serving as Councilman will allow me to apply my 35 years in business to benefit the people of District 19, who have nurtured me and my family.  It is that experience that allows me to offer proven, effective servant-leadership.”

Miller, an avid bicyclist, lives in Eastwood with Laura, his wife of 37 years.  They have a daughter, son-in-law and a one year old grand child.
