Owen encourages public comment on proposed sign regulations

From the desk of Tony Hyatt, Communications Director for the Majority Caucus of Louisville Metro Council:

Louisville – Some are big, some are small. Some are high in the air, other down on the ground. Still others are electronic with information, while others are simple.
One can find all kinds of signs in Metro Louisville but are some of those signs appropriate for the area in which they are placed?
“Sign regulation can be one of the most controversial subjects when you when you walk the thin line between visual clutter and business development,” says Councilman Tom Owen (D-8), who chairs the Metro Council Planning and Zoning Committee. “Now the public has a chance to say what should or should not be allowed when placing signs around the community.”
Louisville Metro Planning and Design Services has recently completed a draft revision of Chapter 8, the Sign regulations of the Metro Code of Ordinances. Public Comment is being sought on the draft between now and Thursday, July 31st.
“There is a new interactive website for the public to see the revisions and made comments,” says Owen. “I want to encourage everyone who can to go online and learn what is being proposed. Then tell us what you think.”
The website is:
The site does require a viewer to register and log in order to view and comment. The site does provide a “how to” guided tour as well as files on the draft. It will also alert users to the progress being made through the process of review.
“All public comments will be forwarded to a group of citizens appointed by the Planning Commission as members of the Sign Regulations Revision Committee,” says Owen. “This Committee will review all public comment to further define what changes are needed in the Sign Ordinance.”
Again, the deadline for public comment is Thursday, July 31st at 5:00pm.
